Who is this girl

Daisy Buchanan knows style. As the fabled heroine of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s great American novel The Great Gatsby, this legendary lady manages to command attention everywhere she goes. Generations of readers have fallen under the spell of her innate elegance and haphazard grace. Daisy calls home a perfectly appointed Jazz Age mansion in the Hamptons, but her iconic sense of style transforms her surroundings anywhere she travels.

Barbara Mooney is the Creator and Proprietor of Daisy’s – Alameda, California’s most beloved home accents and gift shop. Daisy Buchanan is Barbara’s muse.

Just as Daisy B. changes her life on a whim, so has Barbara. Barbara and Daisy bring a sense of carefree beauty and fanciful elegance to Alameda’s award-winning boutique and to the customers who love it.

Barbara spent her childhood studying classical ballet and her grand desire was to choreograph Broadway musicals. While a career as the next Bob Fosse didn’t materialize, her other creative pursuits certainly did. Through the years, Barbara poured her wide-ranging creative energies into sewing prom gowns, designing pillows, and cooking from scratch.

Next came a budding catering enterprise in Emeryville, CA, aptly named Gatsby Party Company. In time, the catering business evolved into the popular Jay’s Coffee, Teas and Treats, housed in an old train-station-turned-dance-studio {ah, the irony!} in Alameda. Jay’s was a quaint and comfortable spot for customers to indulge in homemade morning buns and specialty coffee drinks while lingering over a carefully curated selection of gifts and stationery, or pick up a sandwich to go, tied with Jay’s signature blue satin bow.

Eventually, a retail storefront two doors down from Jay’s came available, and Barbara launched Jay’s sister spot, Daisy’s. This was the first incarnation of what today is a notable destination store for the San Francisco Bay Area’s most imaginative shoppers.

At long last, Jay and Daisy were together again, nestled in an island community by the Pacific Ocean.

Life unfolded and as Barbara’s family grew, she decided to sell Jay’s to nurture Daisy’s.

Since then, Alameda’s most storied shop has expanded into a larger location in an historic shopping district. Barbara and her elementary school-age daughter Jillian love creating a comfortable retail space full of fun treasures for you and your home. Their next adventure is a foray into high end gypsy crafts.

In 2010, Daisy’s was named one of 50 Retail Stars nationwide by Home Accents Today, the nation’s premier trade publication for the retail industry. Daisy’s blog, Living the Fancy Life, is a chronicle of shop goings-on and an online gathering place for Daisy’s fans.
